Greener Days Ahead

Lawns under Deans' care are holding up well this season.

Here's what our team is doing, and how HydroBoost is helping lawns make every drop count under once-a-week watering.

Help Your Lawn Recover From Florida's Drought

If your lawn looks stressed, you’re not alone.

Lawns across The Villages and the surrounding Lake-Sumter area are dealing with the effects of D3 Extreme Drought conditions and limited watering. Dry, thinning, or discolored turf can be unsettling, but it does not automatically mean your lawn is lost. Understanding what is happening now is the first step toward helping it rebound later.

Introducing Deans' Hydro-Boost Service

Help your lawn make better use of every drop.

When watering is limited, helping your lawn make better use of the moisture it does receive becomes even more important. HydroBoost is Deans’ two-part moisture-management program, developed to provide added support during challenging drought conditions.

HydroBoost combines Air8 liquid aeration to help condition the soil and allow for deeper water penetration with Hydretain, a hygroscopic application that helps the soil hold onto additional moisture. Together, these applications help lawns make better use of limited water when rainfall and irrigation are restricted.

WHY YOUR LAWN LOOKS STRESSED

And why the right care still matters during drought

During long dry stretches, lawns across The Villages and surrounding Central Florida can start to fade, thin out, or lose their bounce. Heat, limited rainfall, and watering restrictions can all add up fast, even when homeowners are doing their best to keep up.

Common signs of drought stress:

  • Uneven or fading color.
  • Slower growth and thinner turf.
  • Dry grass that feels brittle or weak.

That is why ongoing lawn care still matters. Deans can adjust treatment plans based on current conditions to help support root health and give stressed turf a better chance to recover.

MAKING THE MOST OF LIMITED WATER

Why moisture retention matters during drought

When watering is limited, every irrigation day counts. Soil that can hold moisture more effectively gives grass a better chance to stay healthier between watering cycles.

Better moisture retention can help:

  • Keep water available near the root zone.
  • Support healthier nutrient uptake.
  • Reduce stress during dry periods.
  • Make the most of each watering day.

WATERING THROUGH THE DROUGHT

Your approved watering day still matters

Even with restrictions in place, smart watering can still make a difference. Deep, efficient watering is usually more effective than short, light watering because it encourages roots to reach deeper for moisture.

Best watering habits during drought:

  • Water deeply on your permitted day.
  • Aim for about 3/4 inch of water.
  • Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
  • Give each zone enough time to soak in properly.

That approach helps your lawn get the most from the water it receives while working through drought stress.

Why Staying on Your Program Matters

It can be tempting to pause lawn treatments during a drought, but maintaining professional care is often one of the best ways to protect your investment. Continued treatments help:

  • Strengthen roots and improve drought tolerance
  • Suppress weeds while the turf is vulnerable
  • Monitor for insects like Cinch Bugs, which typically cause issues for weakened grass
  • Support faster recovery when rainfall returns

Even if your lawn appears brown or thin, the root system may still be alive and capable of rebounding once conditions improve.

Common Questions About Drought Conditions

Can my lawn still absorb fertilizer during drought conditions?

Yes. Even limited rainfall can help nutrients activate, especially when paired with programs designed to improve moisture retention.

How do you help prevent chinch bugs?

The best defense is a healthy lawn. Deans focuses on strengthening the turf, reducing stress, and using products designed to suppress chinch bug activity.

How long should I water?

Long enough to apply roughly ¾" of water on your permitted watering day. Deep watering encourages deeper root development.

Is HydroBoost available in my area?

HydroBoost is currently available in select areas, with additional areas coming soon. To check availability, please call (352) 787-5300.

What is HydroBoost?

HydroBoost is a two-part moisture-management program designed to help lawns make better use of limited water. Liquid aeration helps improve water movement into the root zone, while a hygroscopic application helps attract and retain additional moisture within the soil.

What time of day should I water?

Early morning is best, ideally just before sunrise. This reduces evaporation and gives the lawn time to absorb moisture before the afternoon heat.

Why is my neighbor’s lawn greener than mine?

Lawns respond differently based on soil, irrigation, root health, and lawn care history. Some properties may be receiving excessive nitrogen, which can create faster green-up but weaker long-term resilience.

Why is weed control still important during a drought?

As turf weakens under drought stress, weeds face less competition and can spread much more aggressively. Suppressing weeds now helps protect healthy turf and support recovery later.
